For every artist there is an inspiration to paint. For Ufaq Ehsan, the inspiration for her exhibition Cosmic Harmony is to spread the message of peace and harmony in the world amidst the recent backdrop of terrorism violence.

Speaking about her latest work Ufaq Ehsan says, “The language of symbols is a thresh hold between the physical and meta-physical. As my work is greatly inspired by the Sufi literature, colors and symbols play a very important role in my paintings. From the palette chosen to the use of symbolism, the work exhibited reflects my understanding of the concept of “ishaq e haqiqi”. She adds further, “My work has evolved my personal growth and understanding of the universe seen through the eyes and heart of the Sufi mystics. MevlanaJalal Uddin Rumi poetry is my muse and a gentle guide to experience the universal wisdom which binds us all.‎”

Ufaq Ehsan ends by saying this about her latest work, “My aim as an artist is to bridge the gap between all schools of thought and spread the message of peace and harmony taught by Sufis through all ages and times.” She adds further, “Therefore, like cosmology, my paintings give a message of unity in which the entire universe is taken as one whole unit including all creations- physical and metaphysical bonded in one focal unit all engaged in the worship of God. Hence, my paintings reflect my life’s passion and a never ending road to spiritual discovery.‎”

Ufaq Ehsan who has showcased her work at several exhibitions, says this about the process, “Planning an exhibition is a very long and intricate process. It involves different things other than the painting with lots of minute details.” She adds, “Such as designing a brochure, creating a mailing list of prospective buyers and viewers. Creating an event on facebook and trying to create a hype and interest for the upcoming event.”

Ufaq Ehsan is involved in other work apart from paintings, “Yes, I am actively involved in counseling children and women. I have a vast experience in giving art therapy classes to special children. I have had administrative experience in organizing festivals in Lahore and giving art workshops to children from different backgrounds.” She states further, “I am also working for different NGOs which include BACCO (Burn and Child Care Organization), Executive Member FIND (Families in distress), and Executive Member PEACE (Project for Environmental Protection, Anti Narcotics and Community Education).”

Speaking on how much time she takes to complete a painting, she said, “My paintings are very tedious and intricate and take a while to finish them. My latest work 3 ft by 4 ft in size took me nearly 4 months to complete.”

She added this about when she knew when her painting was done, “ When there is a instinctive sense that the painting is finished, I stop painting. Paintings for me are not a piece of paper. They are alive and have a soul.” She adds further, “They interact with you and a dialogue is taking place between the painting and the artist. It’s like having a heart to heart conversation with your most trusted friend.”
